There are many different factors that account for skin ageing..
And to be completely honest, i usually just blame my kids for sending me grey lol.
But i am going to go in depth here and explain exactly why skin ages and what we can do to slow down the process.
So first things first,
The most common cause of premature ageing skin is repeated exposure to ultraviolet light (UV radiation). This is commonly known as the sun, and it accounts for almost 90% of symptoms with premature ageing skin. Just a few minutes of sun exposure each day over the years can cause noticeable changes to the skin, as the sun is carcinogenic and harmful to the skin. Scientific studies have shown that repeated ultraviolet (UV) exposure breaks down collagen and impairs the synthesis of new collagen. The sun also attacks our elastin. Sun-weakened skin ceases to spring back much earlier than skin protected from UV rays. Skin also becomes loose, wrinkled, and leathery much earlier with unprotected exposure to sunlight." This process will also multiply and increase the size of wrinkles. Use a high SPF Suncreen under your makeup before leaving the house.
The second cause of ageing skin is collagen breakdown. Collagen represents 75% of the skins dry weight. The quality and quantity play a major role in the skins appearance. Slowing down the breakdown and degradation of collagen in your skin is vital to keeping your skin young and glowing for longer.
Another cause of skin ageing is oxidation. This process starts with free radicals which are highly reactive, toxic small molecules that can damage pretty much any molecule in the body. Including the important cellular structures found in our bodies largest organ.. the skin. This kind of damage leads to the manifestation of even more free radicals which create havoc in each layer of the skin hypodermis, dermis and epidermins. This often leads to irreversiible breakdowns. Do you consume a lot of sugar? I am sorry to tell you, but sugar does make you age faster. One of the most commonly misunderstood ageing factors is the effect that food has on the body. There are foods that you can eat that will help you retain a younger body and foods that will help age you faster. Choosing a diet that is high in fats, sugars, processed foods, and low in fresh fruits and vegetables creates an internal environment that is anything but youth friendly. Glycation causes the skins proteins (like collagen and elastin) to lose their ability to function normally and is now well recognised and heavily implicated in accelerated skin ageing. Glycation occurs when excess bodily glucose molecules link to the skin’s collagen and elastin fibres. This cross linking can form chemical bridges between proteins. Gylcated fibres can become rigid, less elastic and have reduced regenerative ability which can lead to damage such as laxity, cracking and thinning skin.
